Our Curricular Program
Our goal at REACH is to provide students with a warm learning environment; by keeping the class size small it gives us the flexibility to challenge students based on their strengths while bolstering their skills.
School can be an intimidating place, especially if learning doesn't come easy to a child! We understand there isn't a one size fits all approach to academics. Our instructional levels and groups are tailored to students' individual needs and academic abilities. Our philosophy is that we do not fit the child into a box, but we build a box around the child.
Students receive daily remediation for Reading Fluency and Comprehension using an evidence-based sensory cognitive program. The development of reading skills such as fluency, decoding and comprehension are taught through specific reading and phonics programs as well as through literature.
REACH children learn through experimentation and design with a hands-on constructivist program that is structured in a “spiraling” format that integrates science, engineering, math, design and technology. Students study sciences pertaining to life, earth, physics, physical and systems design in a collaborative setting.
Our daily schedule utilizes a social thinking curriculum which helps students better understand who they are as a person, and how to navigate the world around them. Social/emotional skills and learning opportunities are woven throughout the fabric of REACH School. These skills, a fundamental part of our educational philosophy, are crucial to intellectual growth and lifelong success.
Our humanities curriculum revolves around expanding social concepts. Students study self, family, community, city, country and world. Students are taught to question and inquire about concepts such as fairness, equality, tolerance, generosity, compassion, human rights, and sustainability. In addition, many field trips throughout the year enhance the students’ experiences.
At REACH, math is both activity and technology based, and requires students to think creatively about problem–solving while becoming fluent with mathematical skills. Engaging activities reinforce students’ understanding of important mathematical concepts and skills, and the use of manipulatives for applied learning is a strong component. Math is extended for students who demonstrate in-depth number sense in an individualized and differentiated approach.
Students have a physical education block Monday-Thursday every week. P.E. skill development stresses gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination and general fitness; this moves to more specific skills as children mature. Leadership, sportsmanship, cooperation, empathy and positive self-image are encouraged throughout all grades.
